Nicky Blackmarket

We are so excited to have legendary Jungle/Drum & Bass DJ and producer Nicky Blackmarket with us for our first ever Sober Spaces club night.

Nicky started DJing in the 1980s when he was 14 and is regarded as one of the pivotal figures in the early jungle/drum and bass scene. He also founded independent dance music record store Blackmarket Records (now known as BM-Soho).

He’s been playing drum and bass all over the world for the past two decades and we are over the moon to have him support our night!

Anonymous Dub Sound

Anonymous has been playing reggae music since the 1980’s, also chatting lyrics on the mic. Anonymous Dub Sound was established in 2014 so young, but old in their roots. They play all genres of reggae music, even soul, funk, R & B and hip hop. You can listen to Anonymous on BCFM 93.2fm every Wednesday 9 – 10pm.

DJ Relentless

Relentless has been a regular on the scene for 32 years playing everything from acid house to jungle, but tonight he’ll be continuing the drum & bass vibe. He also runs Vinyl Destination mainly focussing on music from 1990-2000 and spanning a number of genres including techno, gabba, house, hardcore and jungle.

What are the events?

Our mission is simple - to host regular, high quality and affordable live events that are drug and alcohol free. BSS is a collaboration between BDP, Not Saints, and the broader Bristol recovery and sober communities. We are supported by the National Lottery, Not Saints, BDP and Bristol City Council.

Who can attend?

Our events are for anyone who wants go to a sober event, for whatever reason. Whether you've chosen a sober life, are in recovery, don’t drink for cultural, religious or health reasons, or if you're just not fussed if there’s alcohol on sale, then Sober Spaces is here for you.

Why Sober Spaces?

We are part of a growing world wide movement towards normalising drug and alcohol free events. Since 2020, there has been a huge rise in the low to no alcohol drinks market, coinciding with more awareness of the need for safe and inclusive spaces, and the rise of the sober curious movement.

Our events are great nights out in themselves, with the added benefits of not having a hangover, saving money, engaging with music and performance with a straight head, and feeling connected to a supportive community.

How can I get involved?

If you're interested in getting involved with our community, you can attend our events, sign up for our newsletter, perform at an event, or get involved behind the scenes.

Still have questions?

If you still have questions or need more information, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're here to make connections!

It was such a privilege to perform with sober spaces and be a part of a process in which people are sharing their unique musical gufts in a space that is a supportive and caring of everyone's journey in life.

Alice

Great! Really diverse audience, great venue (felt very “normal”), music was fantastic. Really enjoyed it being a big band with dancing vibes rather than just acoustic music (which is also great but felt like a real treat to have a big band).

Lydia

We need so much more of this in Bristol. Live music and dancing is what every sober person I meet worries about - it’s fantastic to have a safe space to get involved.

Samantha

It was brilliant to work in an atmosphere with such a vibe that was created by the passion of the Sober Spaces team for music and events. There's always a lot to do from a technical point of view, and working with Bristol Sober Spaces was a breeze from start to finish. Engineering the sound for the artists they had chosen was also a delight, and really highlighted the creativity from each of them.

James

Welcoming, upbeat, and markedly free from the anxiety of the unpredictability which comes with intoxication.

It was such an honour to be part of the Sober Spaces event. It felt like a really valuable gathering for people supporting eachother in a new wat of life. I feel passionately about being part of the sober community and the night we put on was full, and buzzing with positive energy. Keep these gatherings going!
